What's New
NEW PORT NEWS
Early last season the Schooner Liberty had been docked at the Sunset Bay Marina in Wilson directly behind the Sunset Grille. Although the harbor was a beautiful one complete with its own pair of resident swans and their signets, the location was a bit hard to find for our out-of-town guests. In June, we were made aware of a nearby site that we have hopes will be more suitable for our commercial venture.
"Olcott Beach," as it is known by it's residents, is a lakeside community which is home to the deepest harbor on Lake Ontario west of Rochester. Situated at the end of East Main Street, near the intersection of Rt. 18 and Rt. 78, our schooner's new home will be easier to locate and also more convenient for all. In addition to a safer gang plank for loading passengers, substantial seating will be available for those awaiting departure or just those who want to take in the sights of the beautiful harbor. Being the location of the Harbor Overlook, a new gazebo is also in the works by the Town of Newfane.
And as if that weren't enough, Schooner Liberty will be within walking distance of many quaint shops and attractions such as the Olcott Beach Carousel Park. At the opposite end of the street, Niagara County's Krull Park is a great place to picnic and the location of many great events including classic car shows, the Pirate Festival and the Niagara Celtic Heritage Festival. Plus!!!! plenty of good restaurants with music frequently playing throughout the summer. As this little community undergoes a renaissance, it's no wonder they say "Olcott Beach, a great place to visit!"
NOT JUST ANOTHER "GOOD OLD BOAT"
For those of you boat fanatics, you may have seen the Jan/Feb 2008 edition of "Good Old Boat" magazine. The article, "The Wooden Boat Revival, Part 2," featured our very own Schooner Liberty! It documents how we stumbled upon our very first woodie along with the early restoration efforts we put forth on her. The story was written by author and fellow sailor Susan Peterson Gately whom we met a few year's back at the Oak Orchard Wooden Boat Festival. Sharing similar interests and both of us having the only wooden schooners at the festival that year, it wasn't long before we became friends. Future plans that we share include organizing a Lake Ontario schooner roundup. What a story that would be!
